In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My product is a new music magazine which is called ‘IGNITE’ which I choose because it almost sounds as if the magazine is about to start something new, ignite and grow into something that will revolutionize and compete with other magazine of its kind. IGNITE is an indie rock genre magazine, this is a relatively new genre and has become increasingly popular with my target audience which is older teenage males going into there twenties. My magazine challenges forms and conventions in the way that I have chosen a theme of just black and white, all of the font all of the photographs that I have taken for the magazine have been edited with a negative effect, I have not come across a magazine that has kept to a theme of two colours including their pictures. I believe that this works as it is a symbol of the genre which is indie, the magazine should be individual and not be the same as all of he other types that are out there. As you can see from the Double page spread that I have made is that I have completely kept to the colour scheme, I have chosen to put the logo of the magazine on every page of the magazine to make the audience remember it and make it distinctive to my magazine. The negative effect adds mystery to the artist and to the and to the magazine. I have tried to keep to the regular conventions of the magazine I was trying to imitate and shadow, I have tried to recreate the same title by having it in different fonts and places on the page. I have also put the image on the left hand side, I believe this was the better option because it is the first part of the double page spread is the left and will grab the audience because they will want to read and see the main artist’s double page spread.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents the social group and demographic by the way I have structured and design my magazine. As I have said before I have used the monochrome scheme to show that my demographic are contemporary and a modern day audience. I had developed a questionnaire and a focus group to ask my audience what type of parts and conventions that they would want such as I showed them three different layouts for the front cover of the magazine I was trying to imitate and they had to choose one etc. my demographic are aged between 16-21, they’re males who are interested a lot in English music and English indie rock. By having the modern colour scheme it symbolises the target audience that they have to be up-to-date with everything that is new, also the fact that no other magazine that I have researched in has this type of layout and scheme shows that the audience is also as original as the magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have taken time to research into the different institutions that produce magazines; there was four institutions that I have looked at in during this project, Bauer media group, Future plc., Team rock limited and then finally IPC media LTD. they are also a large I have looked through all four of the institutions for different music magazines; I have decided that I would want to have IPC MEDIA LTD as my institution. The reasons why I have chosen this because it has the magazine genre I would want which is popular music and has different genres in NME. They are based in the UK which is good because I would want to concentrate preferably on UK music and artists. The other institutions do not appeal enough to me because they deal with music magazines with genres that I am not interested in or would want to produce a magazine about. Also the other choice I was going to go for would be an institution that I had created myself such as CLASH as there institution is made by them from the magazine, this would be good because it would be more personal to the magazine and to the readers as they don’t promote any other magazine.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My target audience for my media product will be as I have said older teenaged males going in to their twenties, aged between 16 to 21, males who go out frequently who are always going out and not staying in doors, it will be males who enjoy the modern day lifestyle of a male at their age, all of the artists are young and this will appeal to the demographic as they can relate and tried to dress and look like as they are modern day artists as well so will be more influenced by them, this will inevitably end up in more sales of the magazine. I choose this audience because I am in that target audience and I enjoy the music that will feature in the magazine so I can relate better to what the demographic would like, rather than an age group that were much older or younger.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I got the audience by putting modern techniques and structure into my magazine; I didn’t go for the typical bright colours and unoriginal techniques that magazines use that are heavily dated, because mostly now companies decide to focus more on their other media platforms such as websites to update because they believe that more people will rather choose that option than reading a magazine. i believe that there had to be a balance between the two both a magazine and a website needs to be modernised and taken care of, because that then gives them more readership. So I have focus massively on making it minimalistic and modern so that the audience know what they are getting and that they know they are getting something different in my product. By having a bolded masthead as I researched in gets the magazine noticed, and a main image as the background of artists that will feature heavily and is popular is a good technique as it could be demographics favourite artists so they will buy it.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a lot from doing this project, there have been many different programs that I have used to construct my music magazine. One of which is the program adobe Photoshop, this was a massive help in recreating the images I have taken for the magazine. As you can see from the images next to this that there is a dramatic difference to the two, if I had left the original photo and had used that as my main image for my front cover it would of looked very unprofessional and less real to a magazine, the edited photo is much more professional and the extra effect gives the real magazine effect that it has been taken from a professional photo-shoot for the magazine. I was unfamiliar with the programme but before I started I made sure that I made myself familiar with the different features of the programme so that I was prepared, this was a massive help as if I would of gone straight in then I would of wasted time. The second part I have learnt is wix, obviously I had the advantage of having done the preliminary task, but it was also a good thing to go over it again, it is a good tool to present my work and show the different areas of how I had constructed the magazine. The using of the cameras as well was good, this was a positive thing using the cameras as I was able to capture more professional shots and the quality of the picture was also better because I used a professional camera, this just adds to the look of a professional magazine.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Throughout this project I have learnt a lot through the creation of my music magazine, most of this is because I have learned from my mistake from my school magazine. I have learned that I have to compare my work that I am trying to create with a real music magazine, I believe that my Front cover, Contents page and Double page spread look more realistic then what my School magazine did when I created it. So the realism of the magazine is better, also I have put more research into the different areas of a magazine, such as the institution, genre, layouts etc. overall I think that this was more of a success than my school magazine I believe I have learned a lot more about media because of this.
